AI Is Coming for Your Job! (And Other Things Consultants Say to Stay Relevant)
(Spoiler: It’s both. But mostly it’s not the catastrophe that keynote speakers want you to believe.)
I recently sat through yet another talk where an "AI TA expert" (read: someone who’s never directly been in-house) dramatically declared that robots are coming for recruiters.
(Dammit, it's NOT the apocalypse. Calm down.)
I’m sitting in a packed room, watching yet another keynote where a self-proclaimed AI “guru” with stunt slide tactics with cool AI avatars of them as the next superhero is breathlessly warning that recruiters are doomed.
I’m sat there simmering in my seat like Mount Krakoa - ready to erupt as this guy hyperboles his way through yet another fear-fuelled monologue of no more than 65 slides (is this even possible to do in 40 mins) about how AI will replace us all by next Tuesday.
This is me.....😭
I'm rolling my eyes as my talk is definitely the opposite view, of how TA needs to lean in right now and take the reign for all AI use cases to become valued Talent Leaders of the future! 🙄
As you can imagine my talk dropped like a flat pancake, recruiters love to hear about the potential catastrophe of recruitment - we love it, just like watching the chaos of British seagulls nicking chips!
Now here’s the maddening part: this guy? He’s actually lovely - not some grisly bear of the conference circuit, but more a softly spoken, tech-cool sipping Macha loving type who probably meditates before breakfast. You get the drift. Genuinely kind.
He's sharp as a knife from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall kitchen - clean, precise and to the point. And his presentation is killer!
And the crowd loves him. I mean, they’re eating it up - his slides, his metaphors, probably even the chocolates.

And there I am, a JELLY BEAN dribbling with a mix of existential dread and professional envy because damn, he’s good. Too good and his talk was fabulous......🚀
However, there’s a voice inside me (maybe it’s my recruiter soul, maybe it’s the lack of sleeping and too many Aperol's) screaming;
"The current narrative and not TA is broken."
The reality is far less dramatic, but far more important here is the opportunity.
HR has a real chance to lead this AI mayhem and it's time to stop outsourcing the narrative to fear-mongers and start talking practical, ethical, scalable implementation.
So let’s park the AI apocalypse rhetoric and talk about what’s really shaping TA today
AI is accelerating at an unprecedented pace and we believe the TA industry stands at a
critical inflection point: it’s time to decide how we deploy this transformative technology.
HR must take the reins and lead the way - thoughtfully, ethically and strategically. We've already seen the pitfalls of early AI adoption in recruitment. Tech giants like
Amazon and Workday have faced scrutiny for allowing biased training data to shape
algorithms, disadvantaging women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. It's true go and google it! 👉 Google Workday And Legal AI recruitment challenge.
These early ventures were abandoned and castaway like ship wrecks at sea. It's great that these big firms take risk and be at the forefront of technology, but let us learn about the possible AI pitfalls for screening and shortlisting.
We know that AI holds immense promise to elevate HR and recruiters
into strategic drivers of future-ready organisations but this
can only be realised if HR professionals proactively guide its use,
embedding fairness and risk management into every implementation.
AI is being likened to the new gold rush and with good reason.
Deloitte projects the global market for Generative AI in HR to hit $1.67 billion by 2032, with more than half of that value rooted in Talent Acquisition. AI-driven tools are already making waves, automating repetitive tasks.
As we stand on the edge of this new frontier in TA, here are the Top Five Trends
Shaping Talent Acquisition Today:
AI’s Growing Pains
The initial AI hype has faded, replaced by growing concerns around algorithmic bias and fairness in hiring. Now, employers are shifting focus using AI to enhance the candidate experience rather than replace human judgment in assessments.
Critical Skills Come First
While full-scale skill based hiring remains a goal, AI is not yet ready to enable skills based hiring at scale. Most organisations are now prioritising critical skills that deliver the greatest
business impact in a practical way.
L&D Moves to the Forefront
Learning and development is no longer optional. With 32% of companies investing in up-skilling initiatives - AI is the case in point - it’s clear that closing the skills gap is a top priority.
EVP Gets Real
Authenticity is now a non negotiable.
Candidates expect more than aspirational culture statements they want tangible proof of values in action. Human centred employee value propositions will stand out amid AI and automation. AI will become the great leveller - thereby employer brand will be the only big differentiator!
Hybrid Working
The New 360 Standard With 76% of employers operating in hybrid models,
flexibility in where, when, and how people work is now a baseline expectation.
It’s a cornerstone for building inclusive, high-performing teams.
Ready to Embrace the Shift?
AI is not removing recruiters, but enhancing work to be strategically accountable. It's time for us to own a different narrative and be more confident about our future!
